Its parameters are: (1) an incomplete set of observations, (2) a candidate hypothesis that accounts for the observations, (3) a comparative evaluation of alternative explanations using criteria such as explanatory power, plausibility, and parsimony, and (4) a defeasible conclusion — the inference yields a probable explanation, not a certain one. It persists through institutionalized teaching in scientific method, diagnostic medicine, and formal logic, where it is distinguished from deduction and induction by its direction of inference (from effect to cause, from data to hypothesis).
