Granular synthesis is a sound synthesis technique in which an audio signal is analyzed, segmented into short overlapping fragments called grains (typically 10–100 milliseconds in duration), and then reconstructed with independent parameters controlling each grain's onset time, amplitude envelope, and spectral content. The technique enables extreme time-stretching without pitch shift, texture generation from recorded material, and the creation of entirely new timbres through granular density and dispersion control. It was introduced by Iannis Xenakis in the 1970s (notably in the piece DAIS for tape) and persists through digital audio workstations, modular synthesizer patches (Max/MSP, SuperCollider, Pure Data), and dedicated granular synthesis instruments.
