Semitone is the smallest named interval of Western chromatic music — the distance between two adjacent pitch classes, named in two qualities: the diatonic semitone (a minor second, e.g. E–F or B–C, spanning two adjacent letter names) and the chromatic semitone (an augmented unison or diminished second, e.g. C–C#, spanning one letter name). Parameters: (1) quality — diatonic or chromatic, fixed by the letter names of the endpoints; (2) size in cents — exactly 100 in equal temperament, roughly 112 (diatonic, 16:15) and roughly 90 (chromatic, 256:243) in just intonation; (3) notation — written as a one-step staff movement with an accidental, or as two adjacent staff positions. Persistence mechanism: maintained through interval nomenclature and scale theory, the physical layout of keyboard and fretted instruments (adjacent white and black keys, one fret per semitone), the accidental system of staff notation, and pedagogy; the name survives in standard interval naming and in the cent scale.
