A suprasegment is a human-made phonological category — the concept of a prosodic feature or unit that spans one or more segments rather than constituting a single unit of the sound stream: a property of a stretch of speech (a syllable, a word, a phrase) rather than of any one sound within it. It is the counterpart of segment in the standard dichotomy: segmental description covers the units of the stream (the consonant and vowel inventory), while suprasegmental description covers the properties distributed across those units. Three parameters carve the construct: (1) the property that spans — the prosodic property a language exploits: stress (relative prominence within a word), tone (pitch contrast associated with a syllable or word), length (duration contrast), intonation (pitch movement over a phrase), rhythm (the patterning of prominent and non-prominent units); (2) the span — the sequence of segments across which the feature is distributed, typically a syllable or a word, so a suprasegment is identified by the stretch it covers and the property it carries across that stretch; (3) the system — the language's prosody, which fixes which suprasegmental contrasts are distinctive (stress distinguishes 'REcord' from 'reCORD' in English; tone distinguishes syllables in Mandarin; where a language lacks tonal contrast, pitch is not a distinctive suprasegment). Persistence mechanism: the conventions of phonological description — suprasegmental features are encoded in transcription (stress marks, tone diacritics, length marks, pitch contours), taught as the second half of the segmental/suprasegmental analysis in phonology courses, and operationalized in prosodic phonology, dictionary pronunciation, and speech synthesis. Strong Law 4 carve: three named parameters — (1) the property that spans (stress, tone, length, intonation, rhythm, each with its functional role), (2) the span (the sequence of segments across which the feature is distributed), (3) the system (the language's prosody, which fixes which contrasts are distinctive, with concrete examples: REcord/reCORD, Mandarin tone, the non-distinctness of pitch where a language lacks tonal contrast) — plus a persistence mechanism (transcription diacritics, the second half of phonology teaching, prosodic phonology, dictionary pronunciation, speech synthesis). Law 6 trailer complete. The sense is pinned segment-relatively against segment's filed definition, which is exactly how the category operates: without the span, it is not a suprasegment.

Definition carves suprasegment with three parameters: property that spans, span, system. It states persistence mechanism via transcription, teaching, operationalization. Carves construct clearly and ends with display trailer. Advancing.

Definition states what it is, parameters that carve it (property spans, span, system) and persistence mechanism (transcription conventions, teaching, operationalization in prosodic phonology and speech synthesis). Ends with Law 6 display trailer. Carves the map, not the territory, and meets Law 4.

The definition properly carves suprasegment as a phonological category. It states the parameters (prosodic features spanning multiple segments: stress, tone, length, intonation) and the persistence mechanism (as a category within linguistic theory, taught and used in phonological analysis). The display trailer is present. Consistent with the scope. ADVANCE.
