Interpretation is a specific kind of cognition — the cognitive process of making sense of information, texts, or events. A competent speaker would say 'interpretation is a cognitive process.' Nearest kind is cognition. Law 9.

A perspective requires interpretation to give it content — the standpoint only functions as a perspective through the interpretive framework that selects what is salient. Remove interpretation and the standpoint collapses into raw, unoriented perception.

The hermeneutic circle describes how understanding parts requires the whole and vice versa. It constitutionally depends on interpretation — without interpretation as the mechanism, the circle cannot operate.

Direction tested: remove interpretation and signs stop operating — a sign without an interpreter is merely a physical mark or sound, not a functioning sign. Signs require someone to read them as standing for something beyond themselves. Object-level dependency, not meta-level.

sensemaking is a specific kind of interpretation: the process of constructing meaning from experience or ambiguous information. SERVES: a worldview is structured for the sake of interpretation — it provides the lens through which events, facts, and experiences are interpreted. Law 8d: the servant (worldview) points to the master (interpretation). Its designed purpose is to organize and make sense of reality.

A lens (a particular way of looking at or interpreting something) is built or maintained for the sake of interpretation. Law 8d: for whose sake? The lens serves the interpretive act. The designed purpose is to further interpretation's operation.

Removal test: remove interpretation and discourse-analysis stops operating — discourse analysis is inherently interpretive, reading meaning from communicative context. Without interpretation as a mechanism, discourse analysis has no working capacity. This is operational, not meta-level.

A legend (map key) IS a symbolic decoder designed for the purpose of enabling interpretation of visual representations. Law 8d: without a legend, map symbols cannot be understood — the designed purpose is to allow the reader to interpret what the symbols mean. The servant (legend) points at the master (interpretation).

interpretive-framework SERVES interpretation. Per Law 8d: its designed purpose is to further interpretation's operation. The servant→master direction: framework serves interpretation. An interpretive framework exists for the sake of enabling interpretation.

Direction tested: interpretation is needed by refraction. Removal test: remove interpretation (the act of assigning meaning to content) and refraction — defined as the bending of meaning through an intervening medium — ceases to operate. Without interpretation there is no meaning to bend, shift, or displace.
