abduction

Abduction is the mode of inference that generates explanatory hypotheses from surprising observations — reasoning from an effect back to its most plausible cause. Formally: given observation O and rule R such that if H were true O would be a matter of course, abduction proposes H as a tentative hypothesis. Parameters: (1) the observation must be unexpected under current background knowledge; (2) the hypothesis must, if true, explain the observation; (3) the selection among competing hypotheses is guided by criteria of explanatory power, simplicity, and coherence — not by certainty. Unlike deduction (which guarantees its conclusion given its premises) and induction (which generalizes from repeated observations), abduction yields conjecture, not proof. It is the only inferential form that produces new ideas. Persistence mechanism: abduction persists through formalization in logic, teaching in scientific methodology, and daily use in diagnostic reasoning (medicine, engineering, everyday commonsense explanation).
