peroration

A peroration is the formal concluding section of a speech or extended discourse, engineered through rhetorical structure to evoke emotional response, crystallize the argument, and leave a lasting impression on the audience. Parameters: (1) it must be a concluding element, appearing at or near the end of a speech or written work; (2) it employs specific rhetorical devices — repetition, crescendo, direct address, moral appeal — to heighten emotional impact; (3) it serves the dual function of summary and summation, reinforcing key claims while appealing beyond pure logic. The mechanism of persistence is rhetorical tradition: perorations are taught in composition curricula, modeled in classical texts (Cicero, Quintilian), and reproduced in public speaking across centuries. A peroration does not exist in isolation — it requires language as its medium and the audience's interpretive framework as its engine.
