Folksonomy is a human-made system of classification produced organically by collective user tagging rather than by expert taxonomy. In a folksonomy, any community member assigns free-form labels (tags) to shared artifacts (photos, articles, documents), and the aggregate of these tags creates a lightweight, emergent categorization structure. Parameters that define folksonomy: (1) openness — anyone can tag, no authority required; (2) flatness — tags are not organized hierarchically; (3) natural language — tags use everyday words, not controlled vocabularies; (4) convergence — repeated tags across users create informal consensus. Folksonomy persists through web platforms and social software infrastructure — it is the map of how laypeople collaboratively organize information without curation.
