An oracle is a human institution in which a designated person, object, or site serves as a medium through which a deity or supernatural force is believed to communicate with the living. The oracle produces oracles — authoritative utterances, signs, or inscriptions — that practitioners interpret as guidance, prediction, or revelation. The institution requires: (1) a recognized medium (the pythia at Delphi, the cast lots, the sacred spring); (2) a ritual protocol for consulting the medium (pilgrimage, sacrifice, specific questions); (3) interpretive expertise (priests, seers, augurs who translate the medium's output into actionable counsel); and (4) communal belief in the authority of the oracle's output. The oracle persists through ritual reproduction, textual recording of responses, and the institutional maintenance of the sacred site.
