chronology

Chronology is a constructed ordering discipline: a set of rules and reference systems by which events are assigned positions on a time axis so that they can be compared, sequenced, and dated. Its parameters: the unit of reckoning (days, years, reigns, generations, seasons); the epoch or zero-point (a creation, a reign, a founder's birth, a calendar reform); the calendrical grid that maps the cycle (lunar, solar, lunisolar, or a civil count); and the crosswalk that reconciles multiple grids (conversion tables linking Julian, Gregorian, and era-based reckonings). It persists through three mechanisms: notation (dated inscriptions, annals, chronicles, calendars); calendrical institutions that maintain and correct the grid (intercalation, the 1582 Gregorian reform, astronomical almanacs); and teaching, which passes the grid and its zero-points to each new generation so dates remain comparable. What chronology carves is the human grid laid over time, not the flow of time itself: zero-points, units, and conversion tables are its artifacts.
