Gestalt is the psychological and philosophical concept that organized wholes are perceived and function differently from the mere sum of their parts. Parameters: (1) the principle of emergent structure — certain configurations of elements produce perceptual or cognitive properties not present in any constituent element alone; (2) the primacy of organization over component analysis — the arrangement and relational structure determine meaning before individual elements are identified; (3) the irreducibility claim — the whole cannot be fully reconstructed or understood by analyzing parts in isolation. Persistence mechanism: institutionalized through Gestalt psychology (Wertheimer, Koffka, Köhler 1912–1930), embedded in cognitive science curricula, and operationalized in design theory and practice (visual perception, problem-solving methodologies).
