Grounding is the relation that anchors an abstract representation — a symbol, model, claim, or computational state — to the portion of reality it purports to be about. It closes the gap between the sign and the world by establishing a traceable connection through perception, measurement, causal interaction, or protocol. The parameters are: (1) a representational vehicle (the thing that carries information or meaning), (2) a referent (the slice of reality the vehicle points at), and (3) a grounding channel that links them — direct sensorimotor coupling, calibrated measurement apparatus, social convention, or causal regularity. Grounding persists through institutions of verification that test whether the representation tracks changes in the referent: scientific instruments that produce correlated readings, peer review protocols that cross-validate claims, market prices that respond to supply shifts, and the everyday practice of checking whether a map matches the terrain.
