A dichotomy is a cognitive and linguistic construct that divides a domain into two mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive categories. It is human-made because it requires an agent to impose a binary partition on a spectrum or complex continuum; the persistence mechanism is institutional enforcement — once codified in law, taxonomy, or discourse, the binary structure shapes subsequent classification and reasoning. Unlike a mere split, a dichotomy carries the assumption that the two halves account for all possibilities, which is its defining constraint and frequent point of failure.
