discourse-analysis is a family of human-made interpretive methodologies that systematically examine language-in-social-context: written texts, spoken interaction, and visual-semiotic materials. Its parameters are (1) the unit of analysis — linguistic features, interactional patterns, or semiotic resources; (2) the analytic stance — treating language as constitutive of social reality rather than reflective of it; and (3) the interpretive framework — e.g. critical discourse analysis (power/ideology), conversation analysis (sequential organization), or Foucauldian discourse analysis (historical regimes of truth). The persistence mechanism is academic institutionalization: methodological training in universities, codified through peer-reviewed journals, citation networks, and sustained scholarly practice across disciplines including linguistics, sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies.
