Definition

A proposition is a human-made abstract entity in logic and language: the declarative content expressed by a sentence, capable of being true or false. It is the bearer of truth-value, the unit of assertion in reasoning and argument. A proposition is not the sentence itself (which is a physical string of marks or sounds) but what that sentence says — the same proposition may be expressed by different sentences in different languages. Parameters: (1) truth-evaluable content, (2) identity conditions independent of linguistic form, (3) role as subject of propositional attitudes (belief, doubt, assertion). Persistence mechanism: propositions persist through the practices of logic, philosophy, and formal reasoning — taught, argued over, and deployed in deductive inference. They are the atoms of thought that humans have carved out of the flux of saying. [formal: propositio | substrate: mind | horizon: a life | explicit: yes | epoch: 0.01]

Why it is in scope

A human-made statement or expression set forth as a claim, assertion, or premise — built to persist through language, formal logic systems, and discourse as a unit of reasoning.

A lemma IS a specific kind of proposition — a proposition that is used as a stepping stone to prove a larger theorem. A competent speaker in logic/math classifies a lemma as a type of proposition. Nearest kind: proposition.

An axiom IS a specific kind of proposition — a proposition accepted as self-evidently true without proof, serving as a starting point for reasoning. A competent speaker would call an axiom 'a type of proposition.' Direction: specific→general per Law 9.

A hypothesis IS a specific kind of proposition — a tentative proposition put forward as a starting point for investigation. A competent speaker would call a hypothesis 'a kind of proposition'. Direction: specific→general.

A premise IS a specific kind of proposition — a statement assumed or accepted as true in the context of an argument, from which conclusions are drawn. Direction: specific (argument component) → general (statement claimed as true). Law 9.

A corollary IS a specific kind of proposition — one that follows readily from a proposition already proven or established. Direction: specific→general. Precheck clear: no corollary↔proposition edge exists.
