A conceptual model IS a specific kind of abstraction — one that's deliberately crafted to select and simplify aspects of a domain for understanding and reasoning. The competent-speaker test holds: one would call a conceptual model 'an abstraction' (specifically, a domain-guided one). Nearest kind: abstraction, not something in between.

Conceptual models are built and maintained for the sake of learning — their designed purpose is to support understanding and reasoning. The servant (conceptual model) points at the master (learning).

Remove conceptual-model and worked-examples stop operating as an instructional construct: they become bare step sequences without the domain model that gives those steps meaning and transfer value. The dependency is constitutive — worked examples derive their pedagogical function from instantiating a conceptual model, not merely mentioning it incidentally.

Direction tested: DEPENDS_ON. Removal test: remove conceptual-models (organized knowledge structures) and elaboration strategies stop operating — they function by connecting new information to existing knowledge frameworks. Without conceptual models to elaborate upon, the technique has nothing to attach to.

Nearest kind (Laws 9, 11e). abstraction-ladder's own accepted definition self-describes it as 'a human-made conceptual model that organizes levels of specificity from concrete particulars at the bottom to abstract categories at the top'. conceptual-model's accepted definition carves exactly this: a deliberately crafted abstraction that selects and simplifies aspects of a domain to support understanding, reasoning, or communication about that domain — which is what the ladder does, selecting the level-of-specificity structure of a domain and simplifying each rung to shared properties so an agent can reason across levels. Specific to general; no nearer live kind exists (generalization is held by the ML error-metric sense, not this construct's kind; framework is a broader scaffolding kind, one rung further up). This is the honest rung for the kind chain.
