A cognitive affordance is an aspect of an environment or artifact that is intentionally designed or organized to enable or support a specific cognitive operation — reducing working-memory load, guiding attention, externalizing memory, or scaffolding reasoning. Unlike natural affordances (which arise from the physical properties of the environment relative to an organism), cognitive affordances are deliberate human designs: checklists, color-coding schemes, spatial layouts, templates, diagrams, and interface conventions that make a cognitive task easier to perform. The carving parameter is design-intentionality: the feature must be the output of deliberate design aimed at cognitive support, not incidental byproduct. Persistence operates through three channels: (1) design documentation and style guides encode the principles, (2) teaching and apprenticeship transmit the practice of creating them, and (3) the artifacts themselves serve as persistent examples.
