middleware

Middleware is a human-made software construct — an intermediate layer of code, libraries, or services positioned between higher-level applications and lower-level infrastructure (databases, operating systems, networks). Its parameters are: (1) it occupies a specific stratum between consumer applications and provider infrastructure, (2) it exposes standardized interfaces or protocols to both sides, and (3) it provides reusable cross-cutting services (message routing, authentication, data transformation, transaction management) that applications delegate rather than implement themselves. It persists as compiled binaries, shared libraries, or runtime services deployed on servers, containers, or in cloud environments.
