Audio-interleaving is a data format convention in which samples from multiple independent audio channels are packed alternately into a single stream or buffer. Its parameters are: channel_count (number of simultaneous audio channels, e.g. 2 for stereo, 6 for surround), sample_order (the per-frame arrangement of channel samples, e.g. for 2 channels: L0, R0, L1, R1 where the subscript is the sample index), and sample_format (the per-sample encoding, e.g. 16-bit integer, 32-bit float). It persists in container and file formats — stored in the sample-interleaved layout of WAV and AIFF files, carried in network audio protocols like AES67 and Dante, and held in RAM as interleaved buffers by audio APIs (Core Audio, WASAPI, JACK). The alternative, planar (or non-interleaved) format stores all samples of one channel contiguously. Interleaving is preferred for file storage and single-buffer I/O; planar is preferred for parallel channel processing. Audio interleaving is a technique for organizing audio samples in memory or on disk. Remove audio samples and interleaving has nothing to operate on — it stops operating entirely. The removal test passes.
- cmrpejt9q06zad1nlone5xtq6INSTANCE_OF →
Audio-interleaving is a specific type of interleaving — it alternates samples from multiple audio channels into a single stream. Law 9: specific→general. 'Audio-interleaving is a kind of interleaving' passes the competent-speaker test.
- audio-streamingSERVES →
Audio-interleaving is a data-packing technique designed and maintained for the purpose of enabling efficient transmission and decoding in audio streaming systems; its built-in purpose is to serve streaming.
- cmrpejt9q06zad1nlone5xtq6DERIVED_FROM →
Audio-interleaving as a domain-specific technique was built on the prior general concept of interleaving. The general interleaving idea predates its audio application; audio-interleaving is derived from interleaving.
