Parameters: (1) signifier — the perceptible form that does the pointing; (2) referent — the target of the pointing, which may be concrete, abstract, present, or absent; (3) mode — direct (demonstrative, e.g. pointing), indirect (descriptive, e.g. 'the tall building'), or conventional (proper names, e.g. 'Paris'). The reference relation is human-made: natural causation between smoke and fire is not reference — reference requires a semiotic system in which the signifier stands for the referent by convention, intention, or learned association. Persistence mechanism: reference persists through linguistic convention, cultural transmission, education, and documentation of semiotic systems.
